The Rutgers Institute for Law and Philosophy (ILP) welcomed a visiting fellow from Spain this semester who is researching contract law and the philosophy of private law as well as related topics in legal philosophy and legal interpretation.

Rodrigo Parra Salamanca is a Ph.D. student and researcher at the Chair in Legal Culture at the Faculty of Law, University of Girona. He holds a law degree from the University of Chile, with the highest honors, and a master’s degree in legal argumentation from the University of Alicante in Spain.

His dissertation focuses on the various legal doctrines that lead to the loss of contractual effects. It aims to offer a systematic and explanatory account of these doctrines by drawing on concepts and distinctions developed in legal theory—such as constitutive rules, legal powers, and the different deontic positions generated by contracts.

"My time at Rutgers Law School, working with members of the Institute for Law and Philosophy, has been an incredible experience,” Parra said. “I had the opportunity to actively participate in the Institute’s seminars, attend contract law classes, and present and discuss my ideas. The facilities and the support at the Law School have also been excellent.”

“It was a true pleasure to work with and spend time with Rodrigo,” said ILP faculty member Crescente Molina. “His work on contract theory is interesting, novel, and important, and our weekly discussions about his research were always stimulating. We will miss him, and I’m confident he has gained as much from his time at Rutgers as we have gained from having him here.”
